Manitoba BPOE & OORP Provincial Curling
Elkhorn, MB was the site of the provincial Manitoba Elks & Royal Purple Provincial Curling Playdowns, the weekend of January 14 – 16th. The weekend was a “smashing success” for the entire community. The co-host lodges were Elkhorn Elks # 381 and the Elkhorn Royal Purple # 228. A field of 19 rinks participated with five ladies, five masters, three seniors, and six men’s rinks. The Elkhorn School Grad Class of 2005 hosted the canteen for the weekend, and from all accounts the food was excellent! Saturday afternoon saw the opening ceremonies officiated by Bro Bob Hackman, ER of Elkhorn Lodge. The flag party consisted of Bros Hartley Opper, Jim Shackel, Allan Tutthill, and Lady Norma Lambkin, all of the host Lodges. The honorary rink to deliver the first stone was comprised of Kerry Shoemaker, of Elkhorn who received her first hearing aid some 25 years ago from the Elkhorn host lodges. Kerry’s parents and her two children were also on hand to see the delivery of the first stone. The remainder of the honorary rink was comprised of second, Bro Bob Thomson, third Herb Richard (MB Prov. Pres.), Skip Lady Belva Wiggins (MB Prov. Pres.), with three honorary sweepers; Ladies Grace Duxbury, Etta Tutthill, and Rosie Bartley, three charter members of the Elkhorn OORP # 228. O’Canada was sang by all present lead by Harley Shepherd, a grade 12 student from Elkhorn School. Saturday night’s banquet of 160 guests were catered to by the Ladies of the Elkhorn OORP # 228, with all of the rinks represented and many of our local dignitaries taking part. An evening of fellowship, karaoke, and a silent auction was then held to round out Saturday’s entertainment. Sunday dawned bright and early for some rinks, which led directly into the finals in all events. Each event needed the second game to conclude the double knockout bonspiel. Congratulations to the winners, the organizers, the host lodges, and the citizens of Elkhorn. What better place to hold an Elk’s event than a town named Elkhorn?
